Rabbi Glenn Ettman
We at Temple Beth Tikvah are excited to have Rabbi Glenn Ettman leading our congregation. His enthusiasm with our children, prior congregational experience and background working with hospice demonstrates a kinship and love of humanity at all ages and stages of life’s journey.

In his words: “Igniting a spark in people of all ages is what drives me, inspires me, and keeps me vibrant as a rabbi. It is my work to shed a new light on our ancient and beautiful tradition. I hope to bring to your community my passion for Judaism and the human spirit.”

Rabbi Ettman spends four full days in Bend each month to lead our services, adult education programs and children’s activities. He also holds regular office hours and helps train our lay leaders.

In addition to his duties at the congregation, Rabbi Ettman is the Director of Bereavement for the Skirball Hospice in Los Angeles, California, where he presently lives. Prior to joining TBT, Rabbi Ettman was a Rabbi at Congregation Beth Israel in San Diego, California. He earned a BA from Brandeis University with honors in Theatre and Judaic Studies, a Master of Arts in Performance and Performance Studies from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University and was ordained by Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion in 2006, where he also received a Master’s Degree in Hebrew Letters.

Rabbi Ettman has served congregations in Arizona, Santa Monica, Santa Ana and Irvine, California. While in Rabbinical School, he received the Cantor William Sharlin Award from Hebrew Union College for excellence in Liturgy. His Rabbinic thesis, entitled "Stage of Torah: A Congregational Guide to Bibliodrama," melds his two great loves, theatre and Judaism.

Rabbi Ettman brings to the Temple Beth Tikvah family an open heart, an open ear and an open door to love, laugh and pursue the beauties and challenges of life. In his spare time, he is an avid golfer, and enjoys softball, baseball, theater, good movies, good books and good conversation.

Rabbi Ettman can be reached anytime through the temple or email. He will be with us in Bend at least once a month; take a look at our calendar to see when he next arrives.

Additional Jewish Professionals

To meet our growing needs, Temple Beth Tikvah occasionally brings in visiting rabbis, cantors, Jewish educators and performers. Following are some of the outstanding professionals who have visited us in addition to Rabbi Ettman.

Rappaport
Rabbi Alan Berg
We at Temple Beth Tikvah feel privileged to have had Rabbi Alan Berg as our first spiritual leader. His substantial experience helped our new congregation grow and establish its identity. He provided wisdom, enthusiasm and knowledge to both children and adults.

Formerly senior rabbi of Peninsula Temple Beth El in San Mateo, California, and of Temple Anshe Amunim in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, Rabbi Berg currently lives in Portland with his wife Bonnie. The Bergs have three children, Emily, Rebekah and Edward.

Rabbi Berg previously served as the associate rabbi at Congregation Beth Israel and the first rabbi of Havurah Shalom, both in Portland. He also served as chaplain and teacher at Williams College and an instructor in medical ethics at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Rabbi Berg is a partner in the HUC-JIR Kalsman Institute on Judaism and Health and serves on the advisory board of the Guthrie Center in Housatonic, Massachusetts. He is a past chairman and co-founder of the URJ Kallot. He has also served as the Jewish Chaplain at the Oregon State Penitentiary. Rabbi Berg was ordained at the Hebrew Union College.

Cantor Ida Rae Cahana
Cantor Cahana, currently serving as Adjunct Clergy at Congregation Beth Israel in Portland, Oregon, is a recognized soloist in light opera, musical theater and oratorio. She has appeared on Broadway, off-Broadway and with regional symphony orchestras throughout the United States and Israel. She made her critically acclaimed London debut in 1996 at the Barbican Centre in a performance of Vanished Voices, a Holocaust commemorative oratorio devised and conducted by Neil Levin. Her Lincoln Center debut came in 1997 as a soloist in Soul of Ashkenaz at Alice Tully Hall, the showcase concert of an international congress on the music of German Jewry. Her work is also included on the acclaimed Milken Foundation Archive of American Jewish Music, and the American Conference of Cantors at 50, A Celebration. She has been a frequent guest artist at cantorial and other concerts throughout the United States and Canada, and at major national conventions of the Reform Jewish movement.
