Celebrate Beth Tikvah's First Adult B'nai Mitzvah Class, With 92-Year-Old "Bat Mitzvah Girl"
Services June 25 and June 26 to be led by Rabbi Berg and Cantor Cahana

At the remarkable age of 92, TBT member Ceil Hermann will become a Bat Mitzvah, joining nine other TBT members who have worked exceptionally hard as part of the congregation's first adult B'Nai Mitzvah class. The entire Bend community is invited to join us in celebration of this occasion in the main sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church. The Erev Shabbat service will be on Friday June 25th at 7:30 pm. The Shabbat Torah Service will be on Saturday June 26th at 9:30 am.

The services will be led by TBT's Rabbi Alan Berg with special guest Cantor Ida Rae Cahana, and the participation of the adult B'nai Mitzvah class.

In addition to Ceil Hermann, members of the adult B'nai Mitzvah class being honored at these services are: Beverly Adler, Leslie Conley, Jeanne Freeman, Corrie Gruden, Terry Reynolds, Kathy Schindel, Lawrence Schechter, Lorraine Shapiro, and Shari Winicki. They have studied for many months for this special occasion, learning the prayers and their Torah portion. Several of them even had to learn Hebrew from the very beginning!

These services will be final ones led by Rabbi Berg, TBT's first rabbi, who will be leaving us after being our spiritual leader for the past 18 months. We are forever grateful for the leadership and counsel that Rabbi Berg provided in helping TBT get started as the first Reform congregation in Central Oregon. We wish him and his wife, Bonnie, all the best in their future endeavors. Of course, we are also excited to welcome Rabbi Glenn Ettman, our new rabbi, starting next month. Rabbi Ettman will lead his first Erev Shabbat service on July 23rd and participate in other events scheduled for that weekend.

June 5th, 12th - Middle East Lecture Series

A three-part series of informative and non-partisan lectures conducted by Alan Eisenberg, Adjunct Professor of History and Political Science, COCC is being offered on Sundays May 15, June 5 and June 12 at 2:00 p.m. at Deschutes Public Library’s downtown Bend branch.

Prof. Eisenberg, discusses the events marking the determination of the Arab peoples of the Middle East to advance their lives towards modernization and democracy. What do these national uprisings mean? How do religion, politics, economics and age demographics provide motivation for potential outcomes?

"The traditional balances of power are changing - perhaps forever - and the nations of the region, the US and European Union have enormous stakes at risk," said Eisenberg. "NATO has intervened in Libya, but what of Syria and Yemen? Saudi Arabia has sent military forces into Bahrain and feels its strategic trust in the US has been betrayed. Could the changes in progress lead to another war between Israel and its neighbors," asked Eisenberg.

This series, sponsored by Temple Beth Tikvah and the Jewish Community of Central Oregon, includes the following lectures:

Part 1: [May 15] Historic background of the Modern Middle East.

Part 2: [June 5] Current events in the region as well as in the individual countries; the causes, motivations and forces behind the popular discontent and demand for significant change. How have the US and its allies responded?

Part 3: [June 12] What are the implications - both to the nations of the region and those beyond? How have the balances of power been changed? Already engaged in three military actions in the region, is a new US/NATO regional policy emerging? Will Israel be faced with a return to isolation and the risk of renewed hostilities? Can the region's traditional monarchies survive and, if not, will it result in catastrophic price increases for petroleum that could shake the global economic system to its very core?

This series is free and open to the public.
